How To Manually Remove a Virus from Your Computer

Friday, January 30, 2009

If you are tired of sitting and waiting for your anti-virus software to remove the new virus infection, the steps below are for you. No programming skills are required! Just a basic knowledge of command prompt syntax will do...for this demo, the virus is on the portable USB drive (e:\virus) named virus.vbs

1. Create a back-up. Safety comes above all else. Save your files on removable storage or on another partition aside from the Windows drive.

2. Run the Windows command prompt. You can run the Windows command prompt by either clicking on the Start Menu\All programs\Accessories\Command Prompt or by pressing Windows + R on the keyboard and typing "CMD."

3. Look for the directory or folder where the virus resides. Go to the folder where the virus is hiding. Its usually resides on the Windows temporary folder or on the Windows system folder. Check partitions and drives for viruses, e.g. type "cd e:\virus"

4. Show the hidden virus and remove its attributes. It will be easier if you can see the virus. Remove the virus attributes, which are read only, archive, system file, and hidden file. e.g. type "attrib -r -a -s -h virus.vbs"

5. Delete the virus. Say goodbye to the virus by deleting it, e.g. type "del virus.vbs"

Microsoft Genuine Validation [Working Checked]

HI friends...this is a great work by my friend...if we hav GENUINE validation...we can update anything frm net..nd we can solve several prob..during XP...soooo

Works Fine for XP & XP With Sp2

This will allow you to bypass the Microsoft Genuine
Validation thingy
this method works better than many others. forget the
cracks and injectors etc... this is the BEST WAY:

1) start > run > "regedit" (without the quotes of
course)

2) go to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents\OOBETimer

...and doubleclick on it. Then change some of the
value data to ANYTHING ELSE...delete some, add some
letters, I don't care...just change it!

now close out regedit.

3) go to start > run >
"%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" (again,
dont type the quotes)

4) the activation screen will come up, click on
register over telephone, then click on CHANGE PRODUCT
KEY, enter in this key: JG28K-H9Q7X-BH6W4-3PDCQ-6XBFJ.

Now you can do all the updates without activating, and
the Genuine Microsoft Validation thingy won't bug you
no more!!

Gmail Goes Offline

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

If you live in Gmail, but don’t always have a broadband connection available, today should be a happy day for you. Google is rolling out a new system for letting Gmail users access their accounts offline. Google will cache your messages on your system using Google Gears. You’ll be able to open your browser to Gmail.com, see your inbox, read and label messages and even write replies without a Net connection. Your messages will send once your system reconnects to the Web.
The system is beta (of course) and accessible through Gmail Labs. But it won’t be immediately available to everyone – Google is parsing out access as it experiments with the new feature. I don’t have access to the new feature yet, so I’ve still got lots of questions. But Google’s post makes it sound like the experience will be almost indistinguishable from using Gmail normally.
“Gmail uses Gears to download a local cache of your mail. As long as you're connected to the network, that cache is synchronized with Gmail's servers. When you lose your connection, Gmail automatically switches to offline mode, and uses the data stored on your computer's hard drive instead of the information sent across the network. You can read messages, star and label them, and do all of the things you're used to doing while reading your webmail online. Any messages you send while offline will be placed in your outbox and automatically sent the next time Gmail detects a connection,” Gmail Engineer Andy Palay wrote.
There will also be a “flaky connection mode” that’s supposed to give you the best of both worlds. It’ll assume that you’re disconnected and use the local cache to store your data, but whenever your connection is working, it’ll sync with Google’s servers in the background.
Just my inbox, my entire 6.2GB mail file or something in between? I work pretty hard to keep my inbox clear, so I hope that it’ll cache more than just my inbox.
How extensively can you search?
The biggest reason we use Gmail is that we can find a message we got two years ago in just a few seconds with the right search terms. But depending on just how much gets cached, your search capability could be severely limited.
Will you work the same way in Gmail whether you’re offline or online?
That’s certainly the way Google makes it sound. If so, that’ll be a big step forward from other attempts to bring webmail offline. You’ve long been able to access your Gmail account through a client like Mozilla Thunderbird. But that doesn’t give you all the Gmail functionality like labels. Yahoo Mail has offered offline access since last summer using Zimbra Desktop. But that also involves using a client on your desktop. For offline access to Windows Live Hotmail, Microsoft suggests using their Mail client software.
Is Gears up to the challenge?
Google launched this system for creating offline access to Web apps nearly two years ago. For a long time, the only apps that used it were Google Reader and to do list Remember the Milk -- an indication that developing for and implementing Gears wasn’t quite as simple as Google would have you believe. In fact, bringing Gmail offline was an obvious use of Gears that has taken 21 months to come to fruition.
(Google also says it's readying an offline version of Google Calendar, also presumably using Gears, though the company didn't specifically say that. Offline Calendar will initially be available only for users of Google Apps Standard Edition and there's no firm release date.)
Is Gears ready now? We’ll see soon.

How to create windows XP live CD in 15 mins

Monday, January 26, 2009

Microsoft       WINDOWS-XP      live CD  is the best way to boot into the operating system without installation into the computer. By using this XP Live CD you can use XP and its features without actually installing them. This sounds cool, right? Creating a LIVE CDis not a big problem. It just involves adding of some plugins One of the easiest ways to do this is using a software called pebuilder. Using it, you can create an XPLive CD in just about 15 minutes!
Here’s all the software you’ll need:

Thw XP live CD can be created by the following steps:

Step 1: Download pebuilder3110a1.exe and install it.

Step 2: For the wallpaper, replace C:\pebuilder3110a\bartpe.bmp with the image you want as your wallpaper. You can
find the default XP wallpaper at C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper\bliss.bmp.
(Both these, of course, assume the C drive as the installation location.)

Step 3: Download the plugins:

  • xpe-1.0.7.cab: This will create the XP start button and taskbar. It is the GUI shell of the XP Live CD.
  • Network Driver Plugin Pack: This provides many network card drivers
  • FreeAV Virus Scanner: This integrates FreeAV
  • diskexplorer_for_ntfs.cab: A very good file explorer And more you can choose what you want to download to add functionality. There are 537 plugins right now to choose from!

Step 4: Open pebuilder. Specify the source path to the Windows installation file. This should be your Windows XP installation bootable CD, where the i386 folder resides.

Step 5: Click Plugins and add the plugins you’ve downloaded. Since you’ve included xpe-1.0.7.cab, disable nu2shell and the startup group.

Step 6: Specify the ISO image file, and click Build.

                                                               xp live cd

Step 7: After that’s done, use Nero (or any other burning software) and burn the image file to a CD. You’re done!

How To Clear Unwanted Items From Add or Remove Programs

We uninstall programs or applications installed in the computer by using Add or Remove Programs option in the control panel Most of the time when you unistall a program it gets completely uninstalled deleting all the contents of the particular software in the system.

Sometimes when you uninstall a program or software it still gets displayed in the add or remove programs. Sometimes you don’t want some unwanted items to show up in the Add or remove programs. This can be achieved with a small registry hack. To do this..

Run the Registry Editor ( Type REGEDIT in RUN and Hit Enter ).

Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Uninstall

Remove any unwanted subkeys under "Uninstall" by deleting them.

This will remove the unwanted applications from the Add or Remove programs of Control Panel. be careful while doing this as playing with you registry can be injurious to your operating system. :D

How do You Organise Your Desktop?

I notice many of my colleagues and friends tend to have lots of icons on their Windows desktop. I, for one, hate to have cluttered desktop as it takes too long to locate an icon/document on the desktop.

I generally 2 types of icons on the desktop: shortcuts to application or folder, and documents. I use a simple strategy to organise my desktop:
  1. Only put the most frequently used shortcuts on the desktop.
  2. Make full use of the 4 corners of the desktop.
  • Top left corner is used for shortcuts of applications
  • Top right corner is used for shortcuts of most frequently used folders. As I put most of my working documents in "My Documents", it is there at the top right corner. For documents that I cannot work on now, but need to revisit sometime in future, I put them in "Actions Required" folder which has its shortcut on the desktop too. Along with these folders are the C drive (HDD) and D drive (CD/DVD drive).
  • Bottom left corner is the temporary place holder for documents that I plan to read or work on. These documents are likely to thrashed after I gone through them before the end of the week.
  • Bottom right corner is the thrash bin. Its location on the right makes it easy for me to drag unwanted files to it.

How to Read Websites with Small Fonts Comfortably

Some newer laptops have pretty high screen resolution (e.g. 1400x1050). Thus, making fonts in most application too small to read comfortably. In particular, the fonts on some websites are way too small for me. I know that you can enlarge the fonts by +, but it way too troublesome as you have to readjust the font size for each website you go to. Fortunately, there is a "minimum font size" settings in Firefox that will automatically enlarge the fonts of those websites with very small fonts. See the attached screenshot for steps on how to do that.

For IE6, you can enable the accessibility feature. But, this will enlarge the font size across the board, making websites with bigger fonts even bigger.
